On the morning of December 19, the unveiling ceremony of the “Joint Research Center of Tsinghua University (Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics) - Southern Power Grid Power Technology Co., Ltd. for Distributed New Energy Power Electronics” and the first meeting of the Management Committee were held at Tsinghua University. Kang Chongqing, dean of EEA, and Jiang Hailong, general Manager of Southern Power Grid Power Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Southern Grid Technology Company), jointly unveiled the research center. Qiao Jiageng, general manager of Innovative Management Department of Guangdong Power Grid Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Guangdong Power Grid Company), expert committee member Xiao Xiang, Lin Guoying, deputy general manager of Southern Grid Technology Company, Sheng Chao, technical director, Gao Ya, general manager of the Technology Innovation Department, Chen Jianfu, deputy general manager of the National New Energy Storage Innovation Center, Huang Chunmei, director of the Office of Scientific Research Institute at Tsinghua University, Lu Mengyuan, joint director of the Office of Scientific Research Institute, Yuan Liqiang, director of the Power Electronics and Electrical Machine Systems Research Institute at EEA, and Ji Shiqi, associate professor at EEA, attended the ceremony. The unveiling ceremony was hosted by Lu Chao, deputy dean of EEA at Tsinghua University.

Huang Chunmei delivered a speech, expressing gratitude to Guangdong Power Grid Company and Southern Grid Technology Company for their trust and support for the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics at Tsinghua University. Distributed new energy is an important development direction in the current power industry. In the context of building a “dual-high” new type power system, EEA has accumulated world-class advanced technology in the field of power electronics. Southern Grid Technology has significant advantages in platforms, funds, and markets. The strong alliance between the two parties will undoubtedly promote the construction process of China’s new power system and provide tremendous support for achieving the “dual-carbon” goals.

Qiao Jiageng expressed in his speech that Guangdong Power Grid Company has made a series of new technological layouts around national needs and industry demands, aiming for a greener, safer, and more efficient energy supply. It has initially formed a major scientific research platform with the characteristics of enterprise innovation. Southern Grid Technology Company, as a holding subsidiary of Guangdong Power Grid, is also a representative work of the integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation of Guangdong Power Grid. Southern Grid Technology Company and Tsinghua University have formed a solid cooperation foundation in aspects such as the national key research and development plan project. The establishment of the joint research center this time is expected to strengthen the research and development of advanced power electronic technology and its application in various scenarios, such as distributed new energy flexible interconnection, multi-station integration, zero-carbon buildings, and integrated charging stations for light storage. The goal is to achieve significant results, nurture experts, lead new industries, and contribute innovative forces to the high-quality construction of the new energy system, the innovative development of the power industry, and the continuous satisfaction of the electricity needs of the broadest people.

After the unveiling ceremony, the Joint Research Center held its first Management Committee meeting. Yuan Liqiang, director of the center, systematically reported on the background, organizational structure, and research plan of the center. Members of the Management Committee and attending leaders made speeches respectively, fully recognizing the research foundation and cooperative achievements of EEA and Southern Grid Technology Company in the field of distributed new energy power electronics. They provided valuable suggestions for the development of the joint center. Kang Chongqing, dean of EEA at Tsinghua University, introduced the overall operation of the joint research center, emphasizing that the electric power electronics and new power systems served by this joint research center are the key development directions of EEA in the future. Lu Chao, a member of the Management Committee and deputy dean of EEA, introduced the overall situation of EEAs research teams and expressed the hope to further expand and deepen cooperation with Southern Grid Technology Company. Jiang Hailong, director of the Management Committee and general manager of Southern Grid Technology Company, and Lin Guoying, a member of the Management Committee and deputy general manager of Southern Grid Technology Company, highly affirmed the research capabilities of EEA and expressed that Southern Grid Technology Company will firmly cooperate with EEA. They hope to further expand the breadth and depth of cooperation in the future.

Finally, the Management Committee approved the charter of the Joint Research Center and discussed aspects such as strengthening subsequent collaborative work, further clarifying the research framework for the next three years, and the work focus for the next year.

The Joint Research Center of “Tsinghua University (Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics) - Southern Power Grid Power Technology Co., Ltd. for Distributed New Energy Power Electronics” will conduct research on the basic theory and key technologies of distributed new energy power electronics. They will tackle key technical challenges such as the networking of power electronic devices and systems, optimization of main circuit design, coordinated control strategies, high-performance drives, and high-precision measurement. Through joint research between the two parties, a series of leading technological achievements will be formed to develop core power electronic equipment that meets the urgent needs of distributed new energy systems. This will accelerate the improvement of Southern Grid Technology Company’s team in the field of intelligentization of distributed new energy systems, promote the development of disciplines related to new power systems and energy interconnection, enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, provide application scenarios for the landing and implementation of research results in relevant fields of Tsinghua University, and achieve collaborative development of production, study, research, and application.
