Abstract:DistFlow model was formulated by Baran and Wu for radial networks. We present several structural properties of DistFlow model and various generalizations. In particular, we show that, for radial networks, we can bound the branch power flows and voltage magnitudes by their counterparts in the linearized DistFlow model. This is convenient, because the linearized model can be solved explicitly given the power injections. We derive second-order cone (SOC) relaxation of optimal power flow problems on DistFlow models and present sufficient conditions for the SOC relaxation to be exact. We generalize the model to mesh networks and show its equivalence to the standard power flow models defined in terms of bus injections and voltage phasors. Finally, we generalize the theory to multiphase unbalanced radial networks.
