Abstract: Power systems are facing a change of the paradigm of operation due to rapid penetration of renewable and distributed energy sources, market reforms, customer revolution, and fast advances in sensing, metering and ICT technologies. Those changes call for new tools and methodologies, developing of which requires an interdisciplinary effort of scientists from many disciplines. Skoltech Center for Energy Systems has been set up to address those challenges and the talk will present some of the research undertaken in that area.

About the Speaker: Professor Janusz Bialek has been the Director of Skoltech Center for Energy Systems at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) since 2014. He was Bert Whittington Chair of Electrical Engineering at Edinburgh University (2003-2008) and Chair of Electrical Power and Control at Durham University (2008-2014). Janusz has published widely on technical and economic integration of renewable generation in the power system, smart grids, preventing electricity blackouts, power markets and power system dynamics. Janusz has also been a consultant to the UK government, International Energy Agency, European Commission, Scottish Government, and a number of power companies. He is a Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE).
