On November 24, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) announced the list of 2022IEEE Fellows co-opted. Yao Liangzhong, Cao Ming, Huang Qi, Li Feifei, Xie Le, and Yang Zhiping from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics, Tsinghua University, were elected.

IEEE is an international society of electronic technology and information science engineers, andIEEE Fellow is the highest-ranking member of the society and the highest honor conferred by IEEE. Those who are electedmust have made significant contributions to the advancement or application of engineering science and technology, and broughtgreat value tothesociety. Every year, about 300 members with senior or life level are elected by IEEE peer experts. The number of elected membersis within 0.1% of the total number of IEEE members that year.

Yao Liangzhong received a master’s degree and a doctor’s degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1989 and 1993. From June 1993 to May 1995, he was engaged in postdoctoral research in the Institute of Nuclearand New Energy. Now he is a second-level professor/doctoral supervisor in the School of Electrical and Automation, Wuhan University. He is mainly engaged in the research on: large-scale new energy power generation and grid-incorporatingtechnology, smart grid technology, large-scalerandom grid incorporation ofelectric vehicles, large-scale energy storage applications, DC transmission and DC grid technology, etc. Reason for selection: Leading in supporting HVDC grid integrated with large-scale wind farms.

Cao Ming received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1999 and 2002, and his Ph.D.degreefrom Yale University in the United States in 2007. Now he is a professor in the Department of Systems and Control, University of Groningen, the Netherlands. He is mainly engaged in the research on autonomous agents and multi-agent systems, mobile sensor networks and complex networks. Reason for selection:Contribution to the multi-agent control system of sensors, robots and social networks.

Huang Qi received a bachelor’s degree from Fuzhou University in 1996, a master’s degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1999, and a doctor’s degree from Arizona State University in 2003. He is currently the Vice President of Chengdu University of Technology. He is mainly engaged in the research onwide-area measurement and control ofpower systems, large power grid analysis and control, smart energy information support technology, smart grid measurement and testing. Reason for selection:Leading in the informatics of intelligent power energy systems.

Li Feifei entered the Science Experimental Class of the State Education Commission of Tsinghua High School at the age of 16. In 1997, he was recommended to the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University and then studied abroad. He used to be a tenured professor of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Utah in the United States. He is now the vice president of Alibaba Group, chief scientist of theDamoyuan Database, and the head of the database businessdivision ofAlibaba Cloud. He is mainly engaged in the research ondatabase system, big data management theory and system design and development, and the security of cloud data management. Reasons for selection: Contribution to database query processing and optimization and cloud database systems.

Xie Le received his bachelor's degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 2004, his master's degree from Harvard University's Department of Engineering Science in 2005, and his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Electrical and Computational Engineering in 2009. Now he is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University. Research interests include the modeling and control of electrical energy systems, the integration of renewable variable energy resources, the design and optimization of competitive power systems, and the theory and application of cyber-physical energy systems. Reason for selection: Contribution to the economic and safe operation of power systems and big data analysis.

Yang Zhiping received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1994 and 1997, and his doctor’s degree from the University of Missouri in 2000. He is currently the head of theSignals team of the autopilot company Waymo. Before joiningWaymo, he worked for Google, Apple, Cisco, and Nuovasystem companies. He is mainly engaged in the research onthe development of methods for signal and power integrity of chips, package and substrate design, high-speed optical modules,varioushigh-speed wiring solutions, high-speed DRAM/storage technology, and high-speed serial signaling technology. Reason for selection: Contribution to signal and power integrity in high-performance data center electronics.
