On January 29th, Imperial College London held a ceremony to reappoint Kang Chongqing as a distinguished visiting professor at its main campus in South Kensington. Professor Goran Strbac, Chair of the Power and Energy Systems discipline at Imperial College London, presented Kang Chongqing, Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics at Tsinghua University, with the appointment letter as a distinguished visiting professor, extending his tenure that began in January 2020.

In his speech, Professor Goran Strbac expressed that during the first appointment period, Professor Kang Chongqing, relying on the Joint Research Center for Intelligent Power and Energy Systems at Tsinghua University and Imperial College London, had conducted fruitful academic exchanges, research collaborations, and graduate student exchanges with the Faculty of Engineering and the Energy Future Lab at Imperial College London, making outstanding contributions to promoting cooperation between the two schools and between China and the UK in the fields of climate change and energy transition. Kang Chongqing stated that he was honored to be reappointed as a distinguished visiting professor at Imperial College London and would further devote himself to deepening innovative cooperation between Tsinghua University and Imperial College London in the field of electrical energy.

On that afternoon, Imperial College London arranged a special academic seminar open to the entire school, where Kang Chongqing delivered an academic presentation titled “Power System Decarbonization Pathways in China. About 150 faculty and students, including Professor Tim Green, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering at Imperial College London, and Professor Richard Green, the Head of the Department of Management, attended. Scholars from other universities such as the University of Sheffield, Cardiff University, and the University of Birmingham also attended the seminar, having come specifically for it. The seminar was chaired by Professor Goran Skibek. During the presentation, Kang Chongqing systematically introduced the main characteristics of China’s power system and the challenges and opportunities brought about by low-carbon transformation. He analyzed the prospects for the development of new energy in the new power system, and elaborated on the key technologies, feasible pathways, and solutions for low-carbon transformation in the various aspects of the power system, including generation, grid, load, and storage. After the presentation, there was lively questioning and academic exchange between the faculty and students of Imperial College London and Kang Chongqing.
