From January 31 to February 1, Kang Chongqing, the dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University, led a delegation to visit the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom and engage in academic exchanges.

On the morning of January 31, Kang Chongqing, Dean of EEA at Tsinghua University, along with his assistant Sun Kai, Associate Professor Zhong Haiwang, Associate Researcher Du Ershun from the Low-Carbon Energy Laboratory, and four doctoral students, arrived at the University of Strathclyde. They were joined by Professor Stephen McArthur, Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, Professor Campbell Booth, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Graeme Burt, Director of the Energy and Environment Institute, Professor Keith Bell, the Scottish Power Chair, Professor Tariq Durrani, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and Chair of the Climate Change Coordination Committee of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ms. Lin Fan, Advisor on China Affairs at the Office of the President, Dr. Hong Qiteng, Professor Yuan Weijia, and Professor Zhang Min of the University of Strathclyde, among others, attended the discussion and exchange meeting.

Professor Stephen McArthur welcomed the delegation from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University. Ms. Lin Fan introduced the cooperation foundation and future opportunities between the University of Strathclyde and China, and played a video speech by Sir Jim McDonald, President of the University of Strathclyde. In his speech, he reviewed the cooperation and exchange between the University of Strathclyde and Tsinghua University, looked forward to further cooperation opportunities in the future, and conveyed New Year greetings at the end of the video. Professor Graeme Burt and Associate Professor Sun Kai respectively introduced the overall situation of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics at Tsinghua University.

After the discussion, the delegation from EEA, under the guidance of Professor Graeme Burt and Dr. Hong Qiteng, visited the power systems, power electronics, DC systems, and superconducting laboratories at the University of Strathclyde.

EEA’s visit to the PNDC Research Center

In the afternoon of January 31st, Professor Campbell Booth, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, and Dr. Hong Qiteng accompanied EEA’s delegation to visit the Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC) at the University of Strathclyde. EEA’s Faculty and students engaged in in-depth discussions with engineers from the research center.

On February 1, Professor Kang Chongqing, Associate Professor Zhong Haiwang, and Associate Researcher Du Ershun each delivered academic reports, presenting key issues and potential solutions facing the realization of China’s dual carbon goals in the power system from different perspectives.

Founded in 1796, the University of Strathclyde is located in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, and is a public comprehensive research university with a good academic reputation. In October 2023, Sir Jim McDonald, President of the University of Strathclyde and President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, visited Tsinghua University and was appointed as an honorary professor at Tsinghua University and an outstanding visiting expert at the Institute of Energy Internet Innovation. Professor Stephen McArthur, Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, accompanied the visit and delivered an academic lecture. From January 10 to 11, 2024, Professor Campbell Booth, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, and Dr. Hong Qiteng visited EEA to discuss cooperative projects. This return visit by EEA demonstrates the close cooperation and broad prospects for collaboration between the two sides.
