Topic : Toward Next Generation Tools for Modeling and Analysis of Evolving Energy Conversion Systems

Lecturer: Prof. Juri Jatskevich the University of British Columbia, Canada

Time: 10:30-11:30, Nov. 6, 2017

Site: 3-102 West Main-building

Abstract :

Thousands of engineers in control centers and research facilities around the world are working full-time developing models and conducting studies of various grid scenarios. Since the models are used by engineers and researchers many times (often iteratively during the design cycle), both the model accuracy and numerical efficiency (simulation time) are very important. However, models of power electronic components and rotating machines are typically the limiting bottle-neck. This talk will present the advances in average-value modeling of power electronic converters and computationally efficient models of electrical machines. The proposed models will enable the next generation of transient simulation tools with new capabilities and extended range of applications, capable of much faster simulations of large-scale systems.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Juri Jatskevich received the Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA, in 1999, and he is presently a Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. His research interests include power electronic systems, electrical machines and drives, modeling and simulation of electromagnetic transients.

Dr. Jatskevich is active in IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), Circuits and Systems Society (CAS), and Power Electronics Society (PELS), and is an IEEE Fellow for contributions to modeling of electric machines and switching converters. He has authored/co-authors over 80 journal articles and over 100 conference papers. He chaired the IEEE CAS Power Systems & Power Electronic Circuits Technical Committee in 2009-2010. He has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics for the period 2008 – 2013, and is presently the Editor-In-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, and Editor of IEEE Power Engineering Letters. He was the general chair of the Sixteenth IEEE Workshop on Control and Modeling for Power Electronics (COMPEL 2015), which is a flagship event in Power Electronics society. He is also chairing the IEEE Task Force on Dynamic Average Modeling, under Working Group on Modeling and Analysis of System Transients Using Digital Programs.
